In search of San Francisco city’s best classic apple pie brought us to Lotta’s Bakery which is on Polk Street, a few blocks down from Swan Oyster Depot. We think we have a winner. The apple pie was as described by my happily satiated daughter: “a rush of appley sweetness that is tart and cinnamony encased in a flakey, buttery crust. Just YUM.” As well as the classic apple pie, Earl’s bakery serves a plethora of delicious temptations (see pics) and we ordered a generous slice of lemon Bundt which was stunning. I’ve never had a lemon pound cake that has more lemon flavor than this one. It's sweet and sour, dense and moist - utterly delicious.

For my San Francisco City Hall wedding I decided to Google bakeries near by city hall and the hotel we were staying at for the rest of the weekend. I wanted everything to be within a good distance for the sake of time.
I found Lotta’s bakery from that search. I called to get information concerning their availability on my special day. I was very pleased after speaking with Earl, the owner of the bakery. He assured me that he could make a nice “wedding” cake and it would taste great.
Let me say… HE DID NOT DISAPPOINT! It is the best money I have ever spent on a cake. Everyone of our guests as well as myself and my husband could not get enough of that cake. It was de -“freakin”-licious!!!! It’s was so darn moist and fluffy with hints of vanilla and coconut. The buttercream icing, like the cake was so damn good. It was perfectly sweet, not overly sweet in anyway which proved to very dangerous but o well it was worth every calorie. Btw it was a vanilla/white 8” white cake with butter cream icing, a very beautiful cake!
I am a little late writing this review but I have already called Earl at Lotta’s bakery in San Francisco to thank him for adding this special layer of greatness to our special day! He is so kind and I cannot say enough about how delicious my cake was. Do yourself a favor and place an order for whatever he bakes because I have no doubt that it has to be the best you have ever had.

If you enjoy high quality pastries this is the place to go. This is an amazing place to get anything from wedding cakes to every day cookies for your cookie jar. My husband and I have ordered birthday cakes and even our wedding cake from Lotta’s. Their princess cake is the best cake I’ve ever had! Everyone there is super friendly, we go on a regular basis and we have been always impressed with everything we’ve tried.

Discovered Lotta's when I moved here in 2011. Lotta was my grandmother's name so I had to check it out (she was a baker). Immediately fell in love with Earl's Blackstrap molasses Ginger Bread. So happy to discover that he is still in business. I just moved back to San Francisco after being away for nine years. Good to have a high quality local bakery near by. There are so many things that I like and have missed. They will be seeing me on a regular basis.
2. Stopped by and got some of Earl's Blackstrap molasses Ginger Bread again yesterday and had a nice talk with him too.
